Max and Robin ate dinner at the buffet that evening. Max didn’t want to run into the Bulgarian at this time. At least not until he could verify his claim that Lara had asked him about poison-hemlock.

After dinner, Robin went back to her cabin to do some work. Something wasn’t sitting right in her stomach. Max speculated it had to do with the seafood she had eaten.

Moving out from the Deck Nine buffet to a bar on the stern of the ship, Max had agreed to meet Lara there for an evening drink. Because of the cooler evening air, Max guessed that most guests were likely in bars without fresh air. But the cool air didn’t bother Max. He found it invigorating.

Lara showed up wearing a pair of tight jeans and a button-up red silk shirt. Her gait was accented by cowboy boots.

Max stood and greeted her with a quick hug. Then they both sat across the table from each other. He was already one rum and coke in, so he ordered another one and she ordered a margarita. He put both on his card.

Once their drinks came and the waiter wandered off, Lara sipped her drink and then licked some salt from the side of the large glass.

“I suppose you don’t get to enjoy the night air like this very often,” Max said.

Almost on cue, Lara shivered and tightened her arms around her frame to get warm. “I’m sorry, but Mexico City doesn’t get this cold. I’m a bit of a wimp when it comes to chilly weather.”

Max needed to ease his way into this conversation. He had come to know Lara over the past few days, and he didn’t believe she could be involved with the murder. At least he hoped not.

“I spoke with a waiter named Grozdan Danchev this afternoon,” Max said, waiting for a response.

“The Bulgarian,” she said. “We call him Groz. Among other names.”

“Such as?”

For the first time, Lara turned red with embarrassment. “It depends on your language. In Spanish, the people call him El Caballo.”

Max knew a little Spanish, but he pretended not to know this term. “And?”

“The Filipinos, the women at least, call him Kabayo.”

“Similar to Spanish and the Italian,” he said.

“So, you’ve heard,” she said.

Max laughed. “He came to the door this afternoon fully naked.”

She raised her brows. “So, it’s true?”

Time to vector. “Then you do know the man.”

“Not in that way,” Lara said emphatically. “He did ask me out a while ago. When I said no, he spread rumors on the ship that I was a lesbian. I never denied it.”

“Why?”

“It’s best not to date anyone on the crew,” she said. “It’s like high school all over again.”

“What other kind of conversations have you had with this Groz?” he asked.

She sipped on her drink. Then, seemingly unsatisfied with that sip, she took down a long drink and licked her lips free of salt again. “I’ve said only a couple of words to that man.”

Finally, Max found an opening. “Are you aware
